2009 New Year Resolutions

I thought it will be great to take time to think through some of the things God wants me to do next year. As Ray Ortlund said, "These are steps I am taking, in courage and obedience, to help me establish an inner life of rest and trust in God.” And then he said, “These things don’t get me to heaven, but they help heaven get to me.”

My 2009 Resolutions:
  • I choose to set a regular time to read the Bible and pray (%)
  • I refuse to submit to peer pressure/human expectations and choose to only do what God has called me to do
  • I resolve to take a step further in my pilgrimage of conquering fear of man (*)
  • I resolve to be firm and clear in saying "NO" when I really must do so
  • I resolve to trust God more in particular areas of my life: career, relationships, health
  • I resolve to pray diligently for my parent's salvation
  • I resolve to be less judgmental towards myself and others; Remembering my own desperate need in the abundance and saving work of God's grace.
  • I resolve to practice femininity, modesty, and biblical womanhood so that I may be an example of virtue in a world of confusion (*)
  • I resolve to act on things that are eternal and furthering to God's kingdom, and when fallen into temporal living, to cry out for grace that He may once again show me His big picture (*)
Notes:
(%) inspired by Ray Ortlund
(*) inspired by Jenny, daughter of Del Fehsenfeld Jr.

I am looking forward to the joy and hardships of 2009. Only...may Heaven downs on me.

Refleksi dan Ucapan Syukur 3

Saya mau bersyukur lagi hehehe. Saya orang yang banyak menerima truth tetapi sedikit mengetahui grace (or mengalami). The life that I am living mirrored what I know...much judging and less mercy. Jesus is full of grace and truth...thus truth and grace must be in balance.

I've never traveled that much in a year in my whole life. Extremely need the break. I don't know why on earth I'd allow myself to go through much unnecessary stress which I am still recovering. I feel very stupid. I covet your prayers, bro and sis. O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, have mercy on me...

I wasn't too sure whether I must leave NZ after my graduation but God did reveal that it was for good to make a move from the land of long white clouds and He also gave me peace to come to this little Asian country located in semenanjung melaka. I had spoken in front of the church in Palmy that I might still be around for another year, but God's ways are not my ways, and I must, and I shall follow His direction. I am grateful to know that my brother belongs to a good church. I was even welcomed and befriended there.

There are a lot of temptations to "serve", taking a role at church but I know my turn is not yet come. This is still a period of rest and recovery for me. I even haven't come to a decision as to which church should I belong, though I already have in mind the options. The weirdest thing happened...as the Christmas time approaching, God somehow put in my heart that I should pray for strength to share the message (the gift, the good news) to someone at least one...lest the season past. It wasn't felt like a burden but it was rather compelling. So, I was given the opportunity to be part of a choir, but it was not the thing I supposed to do. Then, IEC team served at Changi Prison Chapel, there I was moved to mix and mingle with the church visitors. I was grateful for L whom sit next to me...had a chance to accompany her. I was excited yet struggling with sincerity. I don't want to try to "convert" my new friend because no man can and I might not do it out of love. Then, I started wondering about what should I say...God gave me strength to pray with her. I really do hope that she'll come back to that little church and gave her life to Jesus. Ahh, it reminds me of SLC paraparaumu mall evangelism. God had strengthened me in much ways for I was timid, afraid, and not sincere.

Yah...I felt much much peace about this matter. I love you Daddy!!! Terima kasih kau sudah begitu pengertian. Saya salut, papi teh orangnya perduli dengan keluarganya, pintar berbisnis, pemaaf, generous...I am so proud of you!

Lord, I am so overwhelmed with my sins...I am no saint, Lord! I have been very proud of myself, my achievements and doubted you. You have given much...I have sacrificed a little. Have mercy, have mercy, have mercy on Lilis.

Shadow Feet by Brooke Fraser

Walking, stumbling on these shadowfeet
toward home, a land that i've never seen
I am changing, less and less asleep
made of different stuff than when i began
and i have sensed it all along
fast approaching is the day

[CHORUS]
when the world has fallen out from under me
I'll be found in you, still standing
when the sky rolls up and mountains fall on their knees
when time and space are through
I'll be found in you

Theres distraction buzzing in my head
saying in the shadows it's easier to stay
but I've heard rumours of true reality
whispers of a well-lit way

[CHORUS]

You make all things new
You make all things new
You make all things new
You make all things
You make all things

[CHORUS 2]
When the world has fallen out from under me
I'll be found in you, still standing
Every fear and accusation under my feet
when time and space are through
I'll be found in you
when time and space are through
I'll be found in you
when time and space are through
I'll be found in you

Almighty God

Almighty - Parachute Band & Brooke Fraser

Baring all I stand here before you,
All my hurts exposed
In the depths of my despair
I cry out to you, make me whole.

There is nothing I can do to make you love me more,
Nothing I can do to make you love me less.
I get on my knees to lift my hands in worship and confess.

That you are the Lord God Almighty
I fall at your feet
And I fall oceans short of your Glory
Yet you stoop down and make me great
Almighty God.

Every day I choose again to love you
To keep your work in my heart
I give it all to you O Lord I surrender
Take every part.

Coz you are the Lord God Almighty
I fall at your feet And I fall oceans short of your Glory
Yet you stoop down and make me great
Almighty God.

Career Fellowship Notes

What do we need to equip ourselves in the market place?
  1. Integrity
  2. Loyalty to God (ultimate)
  3. Equilibria (effort=reward, work should not sacrifice your quality of life, don't be stupid lah!)

Questions to ask before making decisions:
  1. Is it Necessary? (can we sell lotto tickets? don't be quick to say no. When someone has got no other choice but doing it, it is better for him than stealing)
  2. Is it good?
  3. Is it right?
In order to help answering question no. 3, our standards will be:
    • Analogia Scriptural (according to your understanding of the scripture)
    • Analogia Fidei (according to your faith in Christ, that you are not going against your conscience)
    • Analogia Gratia (according to the grace you have received)
    • Analogia Deo Angelica (according to your experience with the gospel, the gospel is not dishonored, shamed by your decision)
Hope it's helpful! Soli Deo Gloria!

Refleksi & Ucapan Syukur 2

Pak Joseph cuma menyarankan caution, caution, caution. Each of our case or problem is unique and God does not give a particular formula to follow. Then He said...that God's grace is far more abundant than we can think of. WOW. He doesn't know...that sentence changed my whole perspective of the bible and my life. We are so easy...so fast to judge others and ourselves...but thankfully no human can ever judge us, only the gracious God. Gracious GOD. God knows the limit of your understanding in scripture, gospel experience, faith in Him,...don't let others come in between you and God and steal your peace.

God is far more gracious than we can imagine...
This sentence had made me ever hunger upon my pursuit in knowing God. I always wonder when He said that you didn't know what treasure you have on your hands (refer to the Bible)...you have not known the beauty of the scripture. wow. I am all for studying the bible and experiencing His grace ever more in my life.

I am grateful...I am grateful for the biblical teaching, honest exposition of the scripture (not emphasizing what we think, but daring to acknowledge the dual possibilities that seem contradicting or leaving much flexibility for us to interpret). God is glorified. I am deeply thankful.

Dear Obedience

But I Don't Feel Called

A seminary student stopped me a few days ago to ask the question that troubles many young people today. It is not new. I struggled with it when I was a student, as I suppose people have for many centuries. "How can I tell if God is calling me? I don't really feel called."

Usually the question refers to a life's work. Nobody seems to stew very much about whether God is calling them to run down to the grocery store or take in a movie. We need groceries. We like movies. If the refrigerator is empty or there's a good movie in town, we jump into the car and go. Even Christians do this. Spiritual "giants" do it, I guess. They don't even pray about it. But this matter of the mission field. Oh, God, do you want me there? Shall I risk everything and launch out to some third world backwater, some waterless desert, some dreadful place where there are starving children, refugees, Marxists, dictators? Are you asking me to drag my wife, my children, to a place like that?

The call of God to Saul of Tarsus was dramatic--he was blinded, knocked flat, and clearly spoken to. God got his attention. But later in Antioch the Holy Spirit spoke to certain prophets and teachers. "Set apart Barnabas and Saul for me, to do the work to which I have called them." That was good enough. Barnabas and Saul obeyed the divine call, even though it came through other men.

It was during the Mass of the Feast of St. Matthias, in a chapel in the midst of a great, silent forest, that Francis of Assisi heard the call of God. It was not through an angel or a disembodied voice from beyond, but through the reading of the Gospel for that day: "Go and preach the message, 'The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!' ...Freely you have received, freely give." When the young man heard the words read by the priest, he felt that God had finally illumined his path. He did not, however, trust his feelings. He asked the priest to explain the passage. The priest said that Christ's disciples were to preach repentance everywhere, to take nothing with them, and to trust God alone to supply their needs.

Francis thrilled with happiness at this revelation and exclaimed enthusiastically: "That is what I want! That is what I seek! That is what I long to do with all my heart!" On the instant, he threw away his staff, took off his shoes, and laid aside his cloak, keeping only a tunic; replaced his leather belt with a cord, and made himself a rough garment, so poor and so badly cut that it could inspire envy in no man.

Omer Englebert
St. Francis of Assisi

There are at least six lessons in this short story:

1. The man wanted God's direction.
2. He went to church, where he could hear godly preaching.
3. He listened to the Word of God.
4. He asked for help from one who was his spiritual superior.
5. He accepted the help.
6. He acted at once.

It is significant that he found in the words of the Lord the answer to a deep longing in his heart.

In C. S. Lewis's Preface to Paradise Lost, he describes Aeneas' unfaltering search for the "abiding city," his willingness to pay the terrible price to reach it at last, even though he casts a wistful side-glance at those not called as he is. "This is the very portrait of a vocation: a thing that calls or beckons, that calls inexorably, yet you must strain your ears to catch the voice, that insists on being sought, yet refuses to be found." Then there were the Trojan women who had heard the call, yet refused to follow all the way, and wept on the Sicilian shore. "To follow the vocation does not mean happiness," Lewis writes, "but once it has been heard, there is no happiness for those who do not follow."

Yes. My heart says yes to that. What agonies I suffered as a young woman, straining my ears to catch the voice, full of fear that I would miss it, yet longing to hear it, longing to be told what to do, in order that I might do it. That desire is a pure one. Most of our desires are tainted at least a little, but the desire to do the will of God surely is our highest. Is it reasonable to think that God would not finally reveal his will to us? Is it (we must also ask) reasonable not to use our powers of reason, given to us by him? Does it make more sense to go to the grocery store because groceries are needed than to go to foreign lands because workers are needed? If we deny the simple logic of going where the need is most desperate, we may, like the Trojan women, spend the rest of our lives suspended

Twixt miserable longing for present land
And the far realms that call by the fates' command.
Aeneid, V, 656

While Virgil wrote of mythical heroes, his lines echo the more ancient lines of the Psalms which are rich with assurances of God's faithful guidance of those who honestly desire it, and of the lasting rewards of obedience.

Happy the men whose refuge is in thee,
whose hearts are set on the pilgrim ways!
The Lord will hold back no good thing
from those whose life is blameless.
84:5, 11 NEB

Very near is the Lord to those who call to him, in singleness of heart.
He fulfills their desire if only they fear him."
145:18, 19 NEB

It is the sixth lesson from the St. Francis story that is most often overlooked. Obedience is action. Often we do not have any instant light on the particular question we've been asking God, but he has shown us something we ought to do. Whatever it is, however unrelated it may seem to the "big" decision, do it. Do it at once. We thus put ourselves in the path of God's will. A single step taken, if we have his Word as a lamp for our feet, throws sufficient light for the next step. Following the Shepherd we learn, like sheep, to know his voice. We will become acquainted with his call and will not follow a stranger's.

No Limit to His love

"This is how we know what real love is: Jesus gave his life for us."
I John 3:16

It’s nice to be included. You aren’t always. Universities exclude you if you aren’t smart enough. Businesses exclude you if you aren’t qualified enough, and sadly, some churches exclude you if you aren’t good enough.

But though they may exclude you, Christ includes you. When asked to describe the width of his love, he stretched one hand to the right and the other to the left and had them nailed in that position so you would know he died loving you.

But isn’t there a limit? Surely there has to be an end to this love. You’d think so, wouldn’t you? But David the adulterer never found it. Paul the murderer never found it. Peter the liar never found it. When it came to life, they hit bottom. But when it came to God’s love, they never did.

Refleksi & Ucapan syukur

Lilis teh bahagia pisann ;p.

Lilis teh bersyukur untuk:

- feeling better
- lebih bisa bobo
- lebih happy
- talk with Ev. A. Rumbo
- Teman2 dari IEC
- Adikku menerima Kristus
- Sahabat2 gue (K & I... thanks heaps)
- Quote2 yang menginspirasi
- Beloved mom & dad
- Firman Tuhan yang boleh tersedia untuk diperdalam

Setiap sore pas lagi brisk walk, gue selalu merhatiin setiap orang yang berpapasan dengan gue. Karena jamnya biasanya sore, jam-jam pulang kantor, banyak banget tampang-tampang stress, bete, capek...kasian deh. Gue gak kepengen kayak gitu kalo pas kerja nanti. Seperti sukacitanya dicuri. Hiks syerem juga.

Trik-trik Iblis memang dari dulu sama, kita terkadang terlalu greedy in being, doing, having...refer to my older post on the Spirit of Greed by E. Elliot. The thrill will soon grow dim, once you arrived at the top of your achievement. Because just then you'll realize that you can not just stop but keep working to maintain your performance. It's never ending...We feel cheated when the grass is greener somewhere else. Kembalilah kepada Bapa...because only in Him we can be truly satisfied.

to be continue...

For God so loved by Albert B. Smith

For God so loved the world
He gave His only Son
To die on Calvary's tree
From sin to set me free
One day He'll come again
What glory that will be!

Karna Allah cinta
dibrikan AnakNya
mati di golgota
membebaskan saya
Ia kan datang pula
Alangkah mulia!

Come, thou long expected Jesus

Come, thou long-expected Jesus,
born to set thy people free;
from our fears and sins release us,
let us find our rest in thee.

Israel's strength and consolation,
hope of all the earth thou art:
dear desire of every nation,
joy of every longing heart.

Born thy people to deliver,
born a child, and yet a king,
born to reign in us for ever,
now thy gracious kingdom bring.

By thine own eternal Spirit
rule in all our hearts alone;
by thine all-sufficient merit
raise us to thy glorious throne.

Biblical Principles of Success

  1. To be successful in life, you have to first know God and His ways.
  2. To be successful in life, we have to become the people God created us to be. Nobody and nothing can keep us from being the person God has created us to be. Only we can keep that from happening.
  3. To be successful in life, we must be good stewards of that which God has entrusted to us.

To help with observing advent, I found an excellent bible reading from Scripture Union.

Trust God

We are always held in the love of God. We are never wholly at the mercy of other people-they are only "second causes," and no matter how many second or third or fiftieth causes seem to be in control of what happens to us, it is God who is in charge, He who holds the keys, He who casts the lot finally into the lap.

Taken from Passion and Purity by E. Elliot

Advent weeks

Yesterday I was reminded of advent weeks I spent at Grace City Church back in NZ. My pastor has Anglican background so we normally gather together to sing hymns, prays, commit ourselves to the Lord, read scriptures waiting week after week (for 4 weeks) until the Christ candle being lit on Christmas day. Observing advent helps to prepare our hearts for Christmas. A chance to identify ourselves with the Israelites during the waiting period, full of expectation and longing to the coming of the Messiah, the promised One who will bring salvation and redemption.

May the Lord help us to wait.

Life is about taking risks

To laugh is to risk appearing fool
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental
To reach out to another is to risk involvement
To expose feelings to another is to risk exposing your true self
To place your ideas, your dreams before a crowd is to risk their loss
To love is to risk not being loved in return
To live is to risk dying
To hope is to risk despair
To try is to risk failure

Only a person who risks is free...

We are weak but you are strong

When stormy winds against us break
stablish and reinforce our will;
O hear us for Thine own name's sake,
Hold us in strength and hold us still.

Still as the faithful mountains stand
Through the long silent years of stress
So would we wait at Thy right hand,
In quietness and steadfastnes.

But not of us this strength, O Lord.
And not of us this constancy
Our trust is Thine Eternal Word
Thy presence our security

Quotes of the Day

"The disposition...to leave the dearest objects of our hearts in the sublime keeping of the general and unspecific belief that God is now answering our prayers in His own time and way, in the best manner, involves a present process of inward crucifixion which is obviously unfavorable to the growth and even the existence of the life of self."

In Christ Alone

In Christ alone my hope is found;
He is my light, my strength, my song;
This cornerstone, this solid ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My comforter, my all in all—
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone, Who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save.
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied;
For ev'ry sin on Him was laid—
Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain;
Then bursting forth in glorious day,
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory,
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me;
For I am His and He is mine—
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death—
This is the pow'r of Christ in me;
From life's first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No pow'r of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home—
Here in the pow'r of Christ I'll stand.

PS: Esther, Anne, fellow ocfers and tscf brethrens...this is our songs :))! I remember you all. Sweet Jesus. Sing it with all your might!

Refleksi

Belajar submit everything into the authority of Christ. Dia yang berkuasa atas segala keadaan, He will put me through all this. Sekalipun mungkin hati kebapaannya ndak tega melihat kita menderita , tetapi at the other end He can see something beautiful, bringing fruit of peace and righteousness for Lilis. That are far better for Lilis than what she had to go through.

Yesterday it was shared eloquently by kak David. Apakah si Bapa masih mengasihi anaknya yang sulung setelah mengetahui hal itu? now I get it.

Kasih manusia:

Jika kamu ... (rajin belajar, ndak nakal, bijaksana, cantik, langsing, posisi tinggi, kaya, populer, dll) maka Aku mengasihimu.

Kasih Tuhan:

Aku mengasihimu. Aku tetap mengasihimu, Lilis.

Tuhan begitu indah kasihMu. Indeed Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. I love you too Lord! *tears*

From death into life

Open your eyes and see...the seed must die in order to blossom into flowers and bear fruit.

Today

There are two days in every week about which we should not worry, two days which should be kept free from fear and apprehension.

One of these days is Yesterday with its mistakes and cares, its faults and blunders, its aches and pains. Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control.

All the money in the world cannot bring back Yesterday. We cannot undo a single act we performed; we cannot erase a single word we said. Yesterday is gone.

The other day we should not worry about is Tomorrow with its possible adversaries, its burdens, its large promise and poor performance. Tomorrow is beyond our immediate control.

Tomorrow's sun will rise, either in splendor or behind the mask of clouds...but it will rise. Until it does, we have no stake in Tomorrow, for it is yet unborn.

This leaves only one day....Today. Any man can fight the battles of just one day, it is only when you and I add the burdens of those two awful eternities...Yesterday and Tomorrow that we break down.

It is not the experience of Today that drives men mad...it is remorse or bitterness for something which happened Yesterday and the dread of what Tomorrow may bring.

Other responsibilities include troubleshooting of issues relating to flavor formulations, usage of raw materials, mixing instructions and other instructions relating to formulation. I am a fast learner, will you take me?

Be still my soul

Be still my soul, The Lord is on thy side
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain
Leave to thy God to order and provide
In every change, he faithful will remain
Be still my soul, thy best, thy heavenly friend
through thorny ways leads to joyful end...

It is no secret

The chimes of time ring out the news,
Another day is through.
Someone slipped and fell,
Was that someone you?
You may have longed for added strength,
Your courage to renew,
Do not be disheartened,
For I have news for you!!

Chorus
It is no secret what God can do.
What He's done for others,
He'll do for you.
With arms wide open,
He'll pardon you.
It is no secret what God can do
.

There is no night for in His light
You'll never walk alone.
Always feel at home
Wherever you may roam.
There is no power can conquer you
While God is on your side
Take Him at His promise,
Don't run away and hide.

Chorus
It is no secret what God can do.
What He's done for others,
He'll do for you.
With arms wide open,
He'll pardon you.
It is no secret what God can do.

Heresy

Just how prone are we all to be heretics? An old proverb says,

"Beware thou take not one thing after thy affection and liking, and leave another: for that is the condition of an heretique. But take everything with other."

Tozer Devotional on putting up with the weaknesses of others

The Apostle Paul wrote, "We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves" (Romans 15:1). He thus plainly accepts the fact that there will be infirm persons among the believing members of the spiritual community we call the local church. He tells us to bear them, or bear with them in their weakness.

Now who are the infirm persons in the church? How can we identify them? Not how can we find them, for they are sure to be easiest of all persons to find. Their very infirmities make them conspicuous. The infirm brother is the one who has painful conscientious scruples about foods (Romans 14:1-2); or he has deep convictions about certain holy days (Romans 14:5-6); or his grasp of gospel truth is weak, and he is forced to support himself by various crutches which he may have found in some religious attic. To him these scruples are sacred; consequently, he is likely to try to force them upon everyone else, and in doing so he is pretty sure to make very much of a nuisance of himself. That is where the "strong" Christian gets opportunity to give his patience a workout. He dare not dismiss the overheated brother; he must bear with him in love, knowing that he too is of the company of the redeemed.

God's Love

Grace for the Moment: Volume 2 by Max Lucado

“God is love.”
I John 4:16

The supreme surprise of God’s love? It has nothing to do with you. Others love you because of you, because your dimples dip when you smile or your rhetoric charms when you flirt. Some people love you because of you. Not God. He loves you because he is he. He loves you because he decides to. Self-generated, uncaused, and spontaneous, his constant–level love depends on his choice to give it. “The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the Lord loved you” (Deut. 7:7-8 NIV).

You don’t influence God’s love. You can’t impact the treeness of a tree, the skyness of the sky, or the rockness of a rock. Nor can you affect the love of God.

Know Your Part

Grace for the Moment: Volume 2 by Max Lucado

“Consider others better than yourselves.”
Philippians 2:3 NIV

True humility is not thinking lowly of yourself but thinking accurately of yourself. The humble heart does not say, “I can’t do anything.” But rather, “I can’t do everything. I know my part and am happy to do it.”

When Paul writes “consider others better than yourselves” (Phil. 2:3 NIV, emphasis mine), he uses a verb that means “to calculate,” “to reckon.” The word implies a conscious judgment resting on carefully weighed facts. To consider others better than yourself, then, is not to say you have no place; it is to say that you know your place. “Don’t cherish exaggerated ideas of yourself or your importance, but try to have a sane estimate of your capabilities by the light of the faith that God has given to you” (Rom. 12:3 Phillips).

The Spirit of Greed

A New Thanksgiving

Those who call Thanksgiving "Turkey Day," I suppose, take some such view as this: Unless we have Someone to thank and something to thank Him for, what's the point of using a name that calls up pictures of religious people in funny hats and Indians bringing corn and squash?

Christians, I hope, focus on something other than a roasted bird. We do have Someone to thank and a long list of things to thank Him for, but sometimes we limit our thanksgiving merely to things that look good to us. As our faith in the character of God grows deeper we see that heavenly light is shed on everything--even on suffering--so that we are enabled to thank Him for things we would never have thought of before. The apostle Paul, for example, saw even suffering itself as a happiness (Colossians 1:24, NEB).

I have been thinking of something that stifles thanksgiving. It is the spirit of greed--the greed of doing, being, and having.

When Satan came to tempt Jesus in the wilderness, his bait was intended to inspire the lust to do more than the Father meant for Him to do--to go farther, demonstrate more power, act more dramatically. So the enemy comes to us in these days of frantic doing. We are ceaselessly summoned to activities: social, political, educational, athletic, and--yes--spiritual. Our "self-image" (deplorable word!) is dependent not on the quiet and hidden "Do this for My sake," but on the list the world hands us of what is "important." It is a long list, and it is both foolish and impossible. If we fall for it, we neglect the short list.

Only a few things are really important, and for those we have the promise of divine help: sitting in silence with the Master in order to hear His word and obey it in the ordinary line of duty--for example, in being a good husband, wife, father, mother, son, daughter, or spiritual father or mother to those nearby who need protection and care--humble work which is never on the world's list because it leads to nothing impressive on one's resume. As Washington Gladden wrote in 1879, "O Master, let me walk with Thee/In lowly paths of service free...."

Temptation comes also in the form of being. The snake in the garden struck at Eve with the promise of being something which had not been given. If she would eat the fruit forbidden to her, she could "upgrade her lifestyle" and become like God. She inferred that this was her right, and that God meant to cheat her of this. The way to get her rights was to disobey Him.

No new temptation ever comes to any of us. Satan needs no new tricks. The old ones have worked well ever since the Garden of Eden, although sometimes under different guises. When there is a deep restlessness for which we find no explanation, it may be due to the greed of being--what our loving Father never meant us to be. Peace lies in the trusting acceptance of His design, His gifts, His appointment of place, position, capacity. It was thus that the Son of Man came to earth--embracing all that the Father willed Him to be, usurping nothing--no work, not even a word--that the Father had not given Him.

Then there is the greed of having. When "a mixed company of strangers" joined the Israelites, the people began to be greedy for better things (Numbers 11:4, NEB). God had given them exactly what they needed in the wilderness: manna. It was always enough, always fresh, always good (sounds good to me, anyway, "like butter-cakes"). But the people lusted for variety. These strangers put ideas into their heads. "There's more to life than this stuff. Is this all you've got? You can have more. You gotta live a little!"

So the insistence to have it all took hold on God's people and they began to wail, "all of them in their families at the opening of their tents." There is no end to the spending, getting, having. We are insatiable consumers, dead set on competing, upgrading, showing off ("If you've got it, flaunt it"). We simply cannot bear to miss something others deem necessary. So the world ruins the peace and simplicity God would give us. Contentment with what He has chosen for us dissolves, along with godliness, while, instead of giving thanks, we lust and wail, teaching our children to lust and wail too. (Children of the jungle tribe I knew years ago did not complain because they had not been taught to.)

Lord, we give You thanks for all that You in Your mercy have given us to be and to do and to have. Deliver us, Lord, from all greed to be and to do and to have anything not in accord with Your holy purposes. Teach us to rest quietly in Your promise to supply, recognizing that if we don't have it we don't need it. Teach us to desire Your will--nothing more, nothing less, and nothing else. For Jesus' sake. Amen.

Cast a vote, Think on good things

Whatever is true,
whatever is honorable,
whatever is just,
whatever is pure,
whatever is lovely,
whatever is gracious,
if there is any excellence,
if there is anything worthy of praise,
think about these things.

Phillipians 4:8

Be careful what you think, because your thoughts run your life (Prov. 4:23).

You are not a victim of your thoughts. You have a vote. You have a voice. You can exercise thought prevention. You can also exercise thought permission.

Loving nobody

George MacDonald writes: "If I felt my heart as hard as a stone; if I did not love God, or man, or woman, or little child, I would yet say to God in my heart, 'O God, see how I trust Thee, because Thou art perfect, and not changeable like me. I do not love Thee. I love nobody. I am not even sorry for it. Thou seest how much I need Thee to come close to me, to put Thy arm round me, to say to me, MY CHILD: for the worse my state, the greater my need of my Father who loves me. Come to me, and my day will dawn; my love will come back, and, oh! how I shall love Thee, my God! and know that my love is Thy love, my blessedness Thy being.'"

Several Ways to make Yourself Miserable

  1. Count your troubles, name them one by one--at the breakfast table, if anybody will listen, or as soon as possible thereafter.
  2. Worry every day about something. Don't let yourself get out of practice. It won't add a cubit to your stature but it might burn a few calories.
  3. Pity yourself. If you do enough of this, nobody else will have to do it for you.
  4. Devise clever but decent ways to serve God and mammon. After all, a man's gotta live.
  5. Make it your business to find out what the Joneses are buying this year and where they're going. Try to do them at least one better even if you have to take out another loan to do it.
  6. Stay away from absolutes. It's what's right for you that matters. Be your own person and don't allow yourself to get hung up on what others expect of you.
  7. Make sure you get your rights. Never mind other people's. You have your life to live, they have theirs.
  8. Don't fall into any compassion traps--the sort of situation where people can walk all over you. If you get too involved in other people's troubles, you may neglect your own.
  9. Don't let Bible reading and prayer get in the way of what's really relevant--things like TV and newspapers. Invisible things are eternal. You want to stick with the visible ones--they're where it's at now.

Isaiah 51:1-16

1 Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness
and who seek the LORD :
Look to the rock from which you were cut
and to the quarry from which you were hewn;

2 look to Abraham, your father,
and to Sarah, who gave you birth.
When I called him he was but one,
and I blessed him and made him many.

3 The LORD will surely comfort Zion
and will look with compassion on all her ruins;
he will make her deserts like Eden,
her wastelands like the garden of the LORD.
Joy and gladness will be found in her,
thanksgiving and the sound of singing.

4 "Listen to me, my people;
hear me, my nation:
The law will go out from me;
my justice will become a light to the nations.

5 My righteousness draws near speedily,
my salvation is on the way,
and my arm will bring justice to the nations.
The islands will look to me
and wait in hope for my arm.

6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens,
look at the earth beneath;
the heavens will vanish like smoke,
the earth will wear out like a garment
and its inhabitants die like flies.
But my salvation will last forever,
my righteousness will never fail.

7 "Hear me, you who know what is right,
you people who have my law in your hearts:
Do not fear the reproach of men
or be terrified by their insults.

8 For the moth will eat them up like a garment;
the worm will devour them like wool.
But my righteousness will last forever,
my salvation through all generations."

9 Awake, awake! Clothe yourself with strength,
O arm of the LORD;
awake, as in days gone by,
as in generations of old.
Was it not you who cut Rahab to pieces,
who pierced that monster through?

10 Was it not you who dried up the sea,
the waters of the great deep,
who made a road in the depths of the sea
so that the redeemed might cross over?

11 The ransomed of the LORD will return.
They will enter Zion with singing;
everlasting joy will crown their heads.
Gladness and joy will overtake them,
and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

12 "I, even I, am he who comforts you.
Who are you that you fear mortal men,
the sons of men, who are but grass,

13 that you forget the LORD your Maker,
who stretched out the heavens
and laid the foundations of the earth,
that you live in constant terror every day
because of the wrath of the oppressor,
who is bent on destruction?
For where is the wrath of the oppressor?

14 The cowering prisoners will soon be set free;
they will not die in their dungeon,
nor will they lack bread.

15 For I am the LORD your God,
who churns up the sea so that its waves roar—
the LORD Almighty is his name.

16 I have put my words in your mouth
and covered you with the shadow of my hand—
I who set the heavens in place,
who laid the foundations of the earth,
and who say to Zion, 'You are my people.' "

A Prayer

Lord, help me to relax
help me to be at peace
like a weaned child with his mother

knowing that you are in control of all things
knowing that you are pleased with me
knowing that you are guiding me

Lord, I am bombarded with man's definition of success
Protect me O Lord that I might only walk according to your ways
Safe me from the trap that money, position and status can bring.

Hmm Romantic!

One Fateful Day

No river's span is quite as vast
No mountain's reach so high.
No rose's scent is quite as sweet
As the love I hold inside.

Every time I see your face and
Every time you smile,
Every time I kiss your lips,
My love grows all the while

I’m the luckiest man to walk the earth
To know a love like yours
Loving is so easy now
You’ve opened my heart’s doors.

And I'll love you 'til my life has ceased
And still more with my soul
Because that fateful day we met,
My heart you forever stole.

Aku gak berani bikin satu. Why? karena belum ada yang menyatakan cintanya padaku, no recipient of my poems. Hehe. and who doesn't like to be in love? Being in love seems like a glimpse of heaven, global warming and spring. Mwahaha.

The Ultimate Test of True Love

The ultimate test of true love

Lt. John Blanchard was in New York City at Grand Central Station, and he looked up at the big clock. It said five till six. His heart was racing. At exactly six o'clock he was going to meet the girl whom he thought he was in love with, but had never met. This is what had happened... He had been in Florida for pilot training during World War II, and while he was there he happened to go to a library and check out a book. As he flipped through the pages, he noticed that someone had made notes in the margins. Reading the insightful observations in beautiful handwriting, he said to himself, " I would love to meet whoever wrote these notes - they seem so kind, gentle and wise."

He looked in the front of the book and saw a name, Harlyss Maynell, New York City. He decided to try to find her. With the help of a New York City phone book, he found her address and wrote her a letter. The day after he wront her, he was shipped back overseas to fight in the war.

Surprisingly, Harlyss answered John's letter. They soon began to correspond back and forth throughout the war. "Her letters were just like the marvelous notes she had written in that book," John recalled. "She was so comforting and so helping."

One time John had confessed in a letter that he had been scared to death when they flew over Germany. Harlyess had encouraged him," All brave men are afraid at times. Next time you are afraid, just say, "Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me."

As they continued to write, John began to realize that he was having romantic feelings toward Harlyss. He wrote, "Send me a picture," and she replied,"No, I won't. Relationships are not built on what people look like."

Still, he was intrigued by her and longed to meet her in person. Finally, the day came when he was to return to the States on leave. He mentioned in one of his letters that he was coming home and would like to take her to dinner. She had arranged to meet him in New York City's Grand Central Station at 6pm, under the big clock. "You'll know who I am because I'll be wearing a red rose," she told him.

At last the day had come. John waited nervously to finally meet the girl he thought he loved. Here is how John described his first meeting with Harlyss Maynell:

"A young woman was coming toward me, her figure long and slim. She had blonde hair that lay back in curls from her delicate ears. Her eyes were as blue as flowers. Her lips and chin had a gentle firmness, and in a pale green suit she looked like spring-time come alive!

Excitedly, I started toward her, entirely forgetting to notice that she was not wearing a red rose. As I moved her way, she noticed me. A small provocative smill curled her lips.

"Going my way, soldier?" she asked coyly. I took another step closer to her. It was then that I saw.. Harlyss Maynell with the red rose in her coat, directly behind the girl in green. My heart sank. She was a woman well past forty. She was plump. She had graying hair tucked under a worn hat. Her thick ankles were thrust into low shoes. The girl in the green suit was walking quickly away. I had to make a choice. Should I follow after the beauty who had just spoken to me? Or stay and face poor Harlyss Maynell?

I made my decision and I did not hesitate. Turning toward the woman, I smiled. Even as I began to speak, I felt choked by bitter disappointment. "You must be Miss Maynell, " I said, extending my hand. "I'm so glad you could meet me. Will you join me for dinner?"

The older woman's face then broadened into a smile. "I don't know what this is all about, son," she replied, "but you know that young woman in the green suit who just went by? I met her on the train. She begged me to wear this rose in my coat. She said that if you should ask me to dinner, to tell you she's waiting for you in that big restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test."

I am so much more than what is written on my face.

Thanks Fran for sharing it.

Words for me today

Fear not, you worm Jacob, you men of Israel! I am the one who helps you, declares the Lord; Your redeemer is the Holy One of Israel. Isa 41:14

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality,
nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Cor 6:9-11

But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned. Tit 3:9-11

God uses sinners - there is no one else to use. Elisabeth Elliot

We are to be faithful in transmitting the message and willing to respect the hearer. If God grants him freedom of will to receive or reject, so must I. If he is as yet unable to receive it, I must entrust him to God, remembering the narrow limits of my own understanding as well. Elisabeth Elliot

Edensor

Aku juga pengen!!! but I think I wouldn't want to be left cold and the attack at Romania was scary. Aku sebenarnya berharap kalo Ikal bertemu A Ling di Edensor. Since, A Ling yang mengenalkan Ikal pada tempat itu lewat sebuah buku. Anyway, we gotta wait for the last book, Maryamah Karpov which is planned to be published this month! Hopefully, some good conclusions. Congratulations in advanced Andrea!

Sang Pemimpi

Jangan pernah putus asa!
Jangan pernah ragu untuk menggantungkan mimpi-mimpimu setinggi langit!
Jangan pernah mendahului nasib!

Laskar Pelangi

Bunga Krisan

A Ling, lihatlah ke langit
jauh tinggi di angkasa
Awan - awan putih yang berarak itu
Aku mengirim bunga-bunga Krisan untukmu

Rindu

Cinta ini benar-benar menyusahkanku
Ketika kita saling memandang setelah sembahyang rebut

Namun ingin kukatakan kepadamu
Setiap malam aku bersyukur kita telah bertemu
Karena hanya padamu, aku akan merasa rindu...

A Ling

Wah, aku ngefans berat ama puisinya A Ling. Romantisnya.

Jauh Tinggi

A Ling, hari ini aku mendaki ke gunung Selumar
Tinggi, tinggi sekali sampai ke puncaknya
Hanya untuk melihat atap rumahmu
Hatiku damai rasanya...

Sayang, puisi diatas tak sampai ke tangan A Ling. A Ling terlanjur meninggalkan tanah Belitong untuk tinggal bersama bibinya di Jakarta. Oh, begitu merananya hati ketika cinta harus pergi.

Selama sembilan tahun mereka baru bertemu dua kali.
Menurut Ikal, Have I told you lately that I love you (best sung by Kenny Rogers) adalah lagu yang tepat untuk melukiskan perasaannya sewaktu pertama kali dia melihat wajah A Ling, which I absolutely agree. That's song is a bomb, bulu-bulu kudukku sampai merinding mendengar lantunan Mr. Rogers.
A Ling, A Ling...

Perasaanku bak gado-gado tercampur aduk. Pernahkah anda menonton sebuah film berjudul "Superhero Movie", oh my goodness! Itu film terjelek yang pernah saya tonton. The most disgusting, sickening, disturbing movie I've ever watched! Jangan ditanya lagi. Saya tidak akan merekomendasikannya.

Sebaliknya, saya sedang menikmati "Indonesia's most powerful book" yaitu sebuah kisah nyata karangan anak bangsa Andrea Hirata tentang masa kecilnya di tanah Belitong.

Akmal Nasery Basral  jurnalis-penulis

Launching of Libertà and Being Twenty Three

Dear Reader,

Today is a special day for me :). I celebrated my 23rd birthday in Jakarta. For the last two years I always had dance parties, I miss that. I still have copies of the dance videos wakaka...If I posted them, I am sure to receive desperate requests to undo such expose. So I shall refrain from doing so. Friends, food, and music are gifts to color up one's life, aren't they? Thank you Lord for this life. I want to know more and understand the real meaning of freedom in Christ and may I be truly liberated by His truth day by day.

All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
(Psalm 139:16)

Today is also the launch of a new face and theme for my blog. Libertà is an Italian word for Freedom. Any wonder why Italian? I dream to be able to set my foot one day in that land of pasta. Talk about Renaissance, Religions, Ravioli, Romantic settings and Rome.

I reached the Alps: the soul within me burned,
Italia, my Italia, at thy name:
And when from out the mountain's heart I came
And saw the land for which my life had yearned,
I laughed as one who some great prize had earned:
And musing on the marvel of thy fame
I watched the day, till marked with wounds of flame
The turquoise sky to burnished gold was turned.
The pine-trees waved as waves a woman's hair,
And in the orchards every twining spray
Was breaking into flakes of blossoming foam:
But when I knew that far away at Rome
In evil bonds a second Peter lay,
I wept to see the land so very fair.

-Sonnet On Approaching Italy by Oscar Wilde

Freedom is something that God has been teaching me this months past. Freedom from my legalistic approach to life, fear and anxiety. I finally be able to decide that this is the time to change my blog theme. I am grateful that God keeps showing me his fatherly love, patience and grace.

My grace is sufficient for you for my power is made perfect in weaknesses. (2 Cor 12:9)

I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants."'And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. (Luke 15:18-20)

I am still at the transition phase of my life. It seems such a long period of time and tough. I am not sure If I am ready for the next adventure, the thrill of adventure is great but I prefer settling down and back to routine rather than some uncertain situations. But, oh, I will have to go through it, won't I? I think I will just enjoy my break this time and not to think much about it.

Anyway, yes wish list!!

I only hope to be joyful in whatever situations and see lotsa smile on my face until my next birthday. May be not sort of a list but in this way I won't restrict any surprises.

PS: Hope you enjoy the new face of my blog

Love,

Love in every rose

"All the love that history knows,
is said to be in every rose.
Yet all that could be found in two,
is less than what I feel for you."

I found this poem. so sweet aye. Don't get me wrong, I'm not fallen in love with someone, at least not just yet. Hehehe. You know, when the aunties and mammas meet and talk about single young adult girls, yea, love relationship is the hot topic. Goodness, they can suddenly turn into a matchmaker you know. Pretty fierce. The most annoying thing is when they started to compare you with the other girls in the family whom already in a relationship. Err, in a way I must admit I do envy my cousin hehehe. Another thing, I do get upset when they teased me, annoying but I do. Anyhow, I am not targeting anything, will patiently wait for my prince charming...(no, no to be frank impatient, ;p). In a way, I'm not ready to be married in the next two years (well...I dunno), but you gotta start courting to get to know each other, no? sudah tiga tahun berkepala dua. Gosh, my time is running out what? Haha.

Your name

I wrote your name in the sky,
but the wind blew it away.
I wrote your name in the sand,
but the waves washed it away.
I wrote your name in my heart,
and forever it will stay.

Spiritual Discipline

A brief from Mark Driscoll about Spiritual Discipline.

"One, the spiritual disciplines are not something we have to do to make God love us. Rather, because God already does love us, the spiritual disciplines are something that we get to do as we love Him back and enjoy growing in our loving relationship with Him. Two, the spiritual disciplines are not intended to enslave us. Rather, they are intended to lead us into growing freedom in the same way that a trained athlete or musician is free to enjoy the task more than a novice." Mark Driscoll

Love

I thought I already know how to love but I know not the cost.

I thought It is easy to trust, but I am dead wrong.

I thought forgiving is no sweat job, but I haven't come close to doing it.

Love is patient and kind;
Love does not envy or boast;
It is not arrogant or rude.
It does not insist on its own way;
It is not irritable or resentful;
It does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
(1 Corinthians 13: 4-7)

Oh what hope is there huh? Are you patient and kind? Don't you envy your neighbors? Are you not irritable? Do you always believe all things, never once doubt?

For if you live according to the Flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. (Romans 8:13)

If you still depend on your strength to love others, you will die. You have no hope. See, God has given you a way out. Depend on Him. He will enable and empower you to love. He knows your weaknesses and inability, He has said "come, let me help you"...

Redeeming Love

[Marriage] "It's a lifetime commitment in my book, Lady. It's not an arrangement you nullify when things get a little tough to bear."

"Right now, love doesn't have an awful lot to do with feelings. Don't misunderstand, I am as human as to the next man. I feel all right. I feel plenty right now, a lot I wish I didn't." He shook his head, and his face strained with hurt and anger. "I felt like killing you when I walked into that room, but I didn't. I feel like beating sense into you right now, but I won't". He looked at her with dark eyes. "And no matter how much it hurts , and no matter how much I feel like hurting you back for what you've done, I'm not going to." He snapped the reins and set off again.

Beauty in Brokenness

08/5/08
Beauty in Brokenness
Margaret Manning

Recently, I attended a retreat where there was a great deal of personal
sharing. I sat amazed as I listened to women from every walk of life,
most of whom were established Christians, share of heartache, pain, and
various aspects of struggle they had either just come through, or were
currently experiencing. I was overwhelmed by their honesty and by the
poignancy of their stories. But even more than this, I was overwhelmed by
the beauty radiating from within as they shared their stories.
Beauty in brokenness? Without glorifying suffering, there is an
unexpected beauty that can shine through stories of struggle. One friend
is a paraplegic broken in the use of her body, and yet she has a beautiful
spirit. Not limited by her brokenness, she uses her own difficulties to
help others, and teach others about true ability and disability. Tony
Snow, former White House Press Secretary, considered his cancer a
"calling" and in a recent article written in Christianity Today
said, "We are fallen. We are imperfect. Our bodies give out. But
despite this--because of it-–God offers the possibility of salvation and
grace."(1) That possibility of salvation and grace is beauty in
brokenness.

Somehow, uniquely, God desires to use those difficult moments of our lives
to bring forth something extraordinarily beautiful. Even the natural
creation attests to this truth. In fall, we marvel at the gorgeous, lush
colors of burnt amber, burnished orange, brilliant red, and bright yellow
leaves, even as that beauty belies the slow and gradual death of those
leaves. Winter buries those leaves under the cold, dark blanket of snow
and frost. And yet, death brings forth life. Spring bursts forth year
after year with jonquils, iris, lilies, and all the beautiful pastels of
new life.

During a time of deep despair and suffering, King David wondered about
God's ability to be present in his dark places--to bring about beautiful
redemption in the midst of brokenness. He cried out to God, "Will your
lovingkindness be declared in the grave, your faithfulness in Abaddon?
Will your wonders be made known in the darkness? And your righteousness
in the land of forgetfulness?" (Psalm 88:11-12). David wondered about
God's work in his life--had he been abandoned? Was God still guiding him
even in the deepest, darkest places of brokenness and fear? And even in
those places seemingly forgotten, would God continue to make things right?
David struggled to see how beauty could emerge out of brokenness. And
yet, he later affirmed in Psalm 139, "Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are
there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there... if I say, 'surely
the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,' even the
darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for
darkness is as light to you." It is in those dark places of brokenness
and suffering that God brings forth luminous light so that even the dark
is illuminated.

The prophet Isaiah repeats this theme by promising one who would redeem
the exiles, giving them "a garland of beauty instead of ashes" and "the
treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places, so that you may
know that I am the Lord... who summons you by name" (Isaiah 61:3, 45:3).
Perhaps, these were Scriptures recalled by the apostle Paul when he
declared that "we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the
surpassing greatness of the power may be of God and not from ourselves; we
are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing;
persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always
carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, that the life of Jesus also
may be manifested in our body" (2 Corinthians 4:7-9). Indeed, Paul
declares that "the God who said, 'Light shall shine out of darkness,' is
the one who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of
the glory of God in the face of Christ" (4:6). And so often, that face
of Christ is demonstrated with beautiful radiance through the broken and
dark places in our lives.
Today, if you are experiencing hardship, difficulty or personal darkness,
seek the light and beauty of Christ, for he longs to be present to you, to
give you a garland of beauty instead of ashes, to call you by name, and to
bring forth treasures of darkness. He is there in the brokenness with
you.
